So that is why I wanted to have a South Asian hero for the second book, Dani's book. In my family, my maternal grandparents had an interracial relationship that didn't involve a white person. And then it was also important to me to highlight that interracial relationships don't always involve a white person. But what was very important to me was for one, to have those relationships be very healthy and to kind of illustrate the way I believe an interracial relationship should look, especially if one of the parties is white, as the hero of Chloe's book is.
So it was a bit of a self-centered starting point. It started as something that I did automatically, because I myself am in an interracial relationship. And also just because when I'm writing, I do like to cover as many different ends of the spectrum in terms of the diversity of Blackness that I can. And I really wanted to explore how that would look from a Black British perspective, because, as you mentioned, it's not one that we get a lot of the time. I think especially in British literature, it's quite a humorous convention to have this very posh, very well-off family that's disconnected from the world in a humorous way. They're quite well-off as well, which isn't something that I've always written. They have Jamaican roots like my dad's side of the family. Well, the Brown family, like me, are a Black British family.
So was there a purpose to making the Browns so well-off? Black people with money is something we don't see a lot in literature or, with rare exceptions, pop culture. She's also part of a trio of the fabulous Brown Sisters, and their family has money. She's Black she bisexual she's career-driven she's an amateur witch. Your heroine, Danika Brown, is a doctoral candidate who's about to get her Ph.D.
